CORE MODULE

Pranayama with Doug Keller

Friday, August 30 time TBD
Saturday, August 31 time TBD
Sunday, September 1 time TBD

In this training module we will not only go through how the idea and practice of pranayama has evolved, from earliest ideas of Prana in the Upanishads, through Patanjali, to the detailed elaborations by the hatha yogis, but also the relationship between these techniques and their influence over the nervous system and clarity of mind in particular, and physical health in general.

The emphasis will be experiential, with time given to practicing, repeating, and refining these techniques to get at their essence. We’ll be balancing simplicity and accessibility in teaching the practices with deeper understanding and appreciation for the modern practitioner.

Many modern breath techniques resemble pranayama practices — but pranayama within the tradition of yoga is significantly different in its purpose and effect. We’ll be tying the practice to the larger context of understanding the significance and power of the nadis and chakras, as well as the relationship of the practice to vibration and mantra.

Yoga Metaphysics with Hari-kirtana das

Friday, September 20 from 5:30-8:30pm
Saturday,  September 21 from 8:30am-5:30pm
Sunday, September 22 from 8:30am-4:30pm

The objectives of this module are to teach students what the different metaphysical elements of yoga philosophy are, how they work, and why having a firm grasp of yogic metaphysics, in theory and practice, matters. Key topics in this module include the role of metaphysics in the yogic theory of creation, the three qualities of material nature, the koshas, the relationship of metaphysics to kleshas (obstacles or afflictions), upadhis (temporary material identities), and dharma, and how the practice of yoga reverse-engineers the metaphysical development of material entanglement.

Trainees will gain a comprehensive understanding of each element of yoga metaphysics, how they function in isolation and in relationship to one another, the impact of metaphysical elements on individual and social psychology, how to integrate knowledge of yogic metaphysics into asana, pranayama, and meditation classes, and how the practice of yoga purifies and harmonizes our metaphysical condition with universal principles of existential spirituality.

The learning tools for this module include lecture, discussion, references to relevant passages from yoga wisdom literature, visual support (slide decks), and guided practices.

CORE MODULE

The History & Philosophy of Yoga with Doug Keller

Friday, November 1 time TBD
Saturday, November 2 time TBD
Sunday, November 3 time TBD

Yoga has undergone a long history of evolution in its ideas, with contributions from many streams and influences. And it has evolved and adjusted to meet the needs of the times in which its ideas were undergoing transformation.

This is why understanding something of the history and context of the times is important to understanding the ideas, concepts, and practices fully — especially as we look to how yoga continues to evolve to meet the needs of our current times. That has always been the nature of yoga since its inception, and yoga has always been able to maintain its spiritual core and essence in the process, while the understanding of ‘spirituality’ itself has deepened and expanded to become more inclusive and suited to ‘this-worldly’ spirituality that looks to our personal and collective good and well-being in this life, rather than only seeking liberation from it.

The purpose of this module is to deepen our understanding and appreciation of the key ideas of yoga as they have developed, especially with an eye to understanding their relevance to our own times, and the lives we live today, including:

  • Exploration of Yoga's Origins:
  • Different Yoga Philosophies and Paths
  • Modern Yoga Movement
