Testimonials from 2010:

"The week in Maya Tulum, Mexico was full of amazing surprises! To leave responsibilities behind and focus on yoga for a full week was the best gift I could have given myself. I really grew spiritually and emotionally! Thanks to Masuda and Annie it was an unforgettable and superb experience." - Jayme

"I expected to get some rest and relaxation while enjoying the sand and surf that one would expect to find on the coast of Mexico. What I didn't expect was the wonderful warmth of not only the staff who worked at the resort, but also the support, companionship and connection that I felt with those who attended the retreat. Between receiving wonderful instruction from both Masuda and Annie, the great amenities in the spa, the serene setting and fun accommodations, my vacation transcended every expectation. I am already looking forward to attending again next year. " - Pita

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Sarah Biggerstaff

Hometown:
Somerset, KY

What Got You in Trouble Most as a Child:
Reading during class at school. I was, and am, a total bookworm.

Perfect Day:
Waking up early and drinking coffee while the streets are still quiet. Then heading out to the Appalachian Trail (with no traffic on 495 or 66!) to hike for a few hours. Stopping home to shower and then heading to yoga at Radiance. Cooking dinner (something with bacon), reading, and going to sleep early on clean sheets. Sounds wonderful!

Two Words that Best Describe You:
Inappropriate and happy

Favorite Spot in Old Town:
My apartment on S. Alfred St

Best Gift Ever:
Ox. He's an "Ugly Doll" that my sister sent me in 2003. He's my most reliable manfriend and we've been all over the world together.

Favorite Yoga Pose:
Tree

Favorite Mantra:
Oh man...I don't have a favorite mantra. I'll put that on my Christmas list for this year. :)

Best Yoga Advice:
Check your ego at the door, and don't compete with anyone else in the room. The time you spend on the mat is about you, and not about how you compare to the person next to you.

TEACHER'S CORNER

Annie Scheppach

This month Annie offers her best yoga tips, advice and insights for Radiance students. Annie teaches Svaroopa Yoga Wednesdays at 7:45pm.

Name a recent challenge you have faced in your yoga practice and how you confronted it.
When I began practicing yoga about 13 years ago, I thought yoga was only the asanas...for relaxation and stress reduction. That is, of course, only one aspect. And from that perspective, there are no longer any challenges in creating time to ensure I practice yoga an hour a day, or more. As I studied, I learned yoga is so much more than poses and how we do them. Yoga is life, loving it, loving ourselves and all those around us, the earth and all its beings.

What piece of yoga philosophy resonates most with you right now?:
"Without practice nothing can be achieved." For me, my practice is living the outside with the stillness I feel in shavasana. I can create that by pausing and bringing back the shavasana feeling. Yoga has transformed my life.

Read any good yoga books lately?:
No, although I always read the monthly teachings of my teacher Swami Nirmalananda. For a change of pace, I just read "The Help" which is extraordinary. While it is not about yoga, all is yoga, yes?

What is next for your practice/teaching?
I will be studying embodiment in the fall and will bring that to students in private sessions.
