MESSAGE FROM MASUDA

I like to start my classes by asking students a question such as, "What is your favorite fruit?," "What inspires you?" or "What would you like to be in your next life?" Students take turns answering the questions and have a chance to meet everyone in class. This process also helps me get to know everyone, feel connected to the class, and practice the art of asking questions.

Questions help us cultivate curiousity and learn about ourselves, others, and life. It takes energy and intention to ask questions of ourselves and others, and sometimes it takes courage because the answers might not be what we want to hear, or we may not be ready for the answers.

Questions are also a great way to deepen our yoga practice by continually asking how a pose makes us feel, why we experience different emotions during different poses, and what keeps us away from our practice.

I encourage you to think about meaningful questions you have for yourself and others this Spring season and take the time to deeply listen to the answers. This simple exercise may take you to new levels of growth and inspiration in your yoga practice and your life.

With Love,
Masuda

Testimonials from 2010:

"The week in Maya Tulum, Mexico was full of amazing surprises! To leave responsibilities behind and focus on yoga for a full week was the best gift I could have given myself. I really grew spiritually and emotionally! Thanks to Masuda and Annie it was an unforgettable and superb experience." - Jayme

"I expected to get some rest and relaxation while enjoying the sand and surf that one would expect to find on the coast of Mexico. What I didn't expect was the wonderful warmth of not only the staff who worked at the resort, but also the support, companionship and connection that I felt with those who attended the retreat. Between receiving wonderful instruction from both Masuda and Annie, the great amenities in the spa, the serene setting and fun accommodations, my vacation transcended every expectation. I am already looking forward to attending again next year. " - Pita

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Greg Knott

Hometown:
Born in Washington DC, but hometown is probably San Francisco.

What Got You in Trouble Most as a Child:
I was a pretty good kid and the few things that I should have got in trouble for I was smart enough to stay under the radar. So I never really did get in trouble.

Perfect Day:
Lunch and a movie by myself. If I have a free afternoon, which is rare, I will get a bottle of wine at lunch and walk to the theater.

Two Words that Best Describe You:
Fun, Dad

Favorite Spot in Old Town:
Hank's Oyster Bar

Best Gift Ever:
My two little girls, Violet 5 and Hazel 3

Favorite Yoga Pose:
I don't know if laying on the floor and resting has a name, but that is currently my favorite.

Best Yoga Advice:
This is not exactly advice, but I always appreciate the positive energy from the class. An hour and 15 minutes when I am not supposed to be anywhere else or doing anything else - no clients, dry cleaning, kids, friends, family, e-mail, voicemail, etc.

TEACHER'S CORNER

Brigitte O'Ryan Pollio

This month Brigitte offers her best yoga tips, advice and insights for Radiance students. Brigitte teaches Flow Yoga Sundays at 8:30am.

Name a recent challenge you have faced in your yoga practice and how you confronted it.
As a mother of 2 young children and a part-time yoga and preschool teacher, I am always challenged by creating time for a meaningful home practice. One of the ways I have confronted this challenge is to shift my expectations of what this practice SHOULD be. As much as I would love to have 2 hours each day for a deep vinyasa and meditation practice, I have realized that I can have a meaningful and deep practice in other ways. In the early morning I wake up for gentle flow and meditation for 30 minutes. At other times of the day, I sneak it in when I can, even if that means having my kids join in with me.

What piece of yoga philosophy resonates most with you right now?:
One of my favorite yoga sutras is Sutra 1.33 which is "By cultivating attitudes of friendliness toward the happy, compassion for the unhappy, delight in the virtuous, and disregard toward the wicked, the mind-stuff retains its undisturbed calmness."

Read any good yoga books lately?:
The book that has made the biggest impact on me recently was A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle. This is not a yoga book, but it is a truly inspirational book for understanding ourselves and our place in the world.

What pranayama would you recommend students practice at home this month
Kapalabhati breath - also known as Breath of Fire or Skull Brightener Breath. This practice can help clear toxins in the body and as its name implies - clear the head. It is also energizing and can be a great practice for early morning or the end of the day when you need a little pick-me up. Because of all the changes that spring brings, I think this is a particularly good practice for this time of the year.

What is next for your practice/teaching?
I am hoping to make it to a yoga retreat this year at either Kripalu or Omega Institute. It would be my first time and I am really looking forward to taking some time to inspire myself and my teaching!
