MESSAGE FROM MASUDA

I'm looking forward to lots of sunshine this Spring and all the new offerings at Radiance Yoga.

I'm most excited about our teacher training program that will begin with an introductory free workshop in April led by Gurudass Kaur and Sat Kartar.

When I signed up for teacher training eight years ago I had no intention of becoming a yoga teacher. I was actually looking for a way to work through the sadness of my father's recent death and I thought 200 hours of yoga might help me heal.

The training helped me to grow stronger physically, emotionally, and spiritually. As a result I learned to accept my father's death as part of my life and to trust that his spirit would always be with me and continue to guide me.

I did end up teaching after the training because opportunites came my way and I wanted to share with others the healing power of Kundalini Yoga.

Teacher training is a special gift to give yourself if you're looking to appreciate and benefit from yoga at a deeper level and want to create possibilities for transformation in your life. I hope you'll join us on April 17th for a free workshop to see if you want to deepen your practice and/or become a yoga teacher.

With Love,
Masuda

Testimonials from 2010:

"The week in Maya Tulum, Mexico was full of amazing surprises! To leave responsibilities behind and focus on yoga for a full week was the best gift I could have given myself. I really grew spiritually and emotionally! Thanks to Masuda and Annie it was an unforgettable and superb experience. Jayme

"The Radiance Yoga retreat at Maya Tulum was simply fantastic. The morning and late afternoon yoga sessions provided a great way to start and end the day. What a wonderful way to start the new year and make some new friends!" Jane

"I expected to get some rest and relaxation while enjoying the sand and surf that one would expect to find on the coast of Mexico. What I didn't expect was the wonderful warmth of not only the staff who worked at the resort, but also the support, companionship and connection that I felt with those who attended the retreat. Between receiving wonderful instruction from both Masuda and Annie, the great amenities in the spa, the serene setting and fun accommodations, my vacation transcended every expectation. I am already looking forward to attending again next year. " Pita

"Thank you Masuda and Annie for a great week. I'm saving my pennies for next year already." Noni

10 WAYS TO DETOX THIS SPRING

1. Eat plenty of fiber, including brown rice and organically-grown fresh fruits and vegetables. Beets, radishes, artichokes, cabbage, broccoli, spirulina, chlorella, and seaweed are excellent detoxifying foods.

2. Drink green tea to effectively cleanse the liver.

3. Take vitamin C, which helps the body produce glutathione, a liver compound that drives away toxins.

4. Drink at least 2 quarts of water daily.

5. Breathe deeply to allow oxygen to circulate more completely through your system.

6. Transform stress by emphasizing positive emotions.

7. Practice hydrotherapy by taking a very hot shower for five minutes, allowing the water to run on your back. Follow with cold water for 30 seconds. Do this three times, and then get into bed for 30 minutes.

8. Sweat in a sauna so your body can eliminate wastes through perspiration.

9. Dry brush your skin or try detoxifying patches or detox foot spas / foot baths to remove toxins through your pores. Special brushes are available at natural products stores.

10. Practice Yoga for at least one hour a day.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Brandy Ashworth

Hometown:
Oakdale, Louisiana

What Got You in Trouble Most as a Child:
I brought stray animals home constantly.

Perfect Day:
I love to travel, so my perfect day would be exploring a new place with my closest friends.

Two Words that Best Describe You:
compassionate and thoughtful

Favorite Spot in Old Town:
Torpedo Factory (I love art and being near the water).

Best Gift Ever:
One of the most thoughtful gifts I received was from a guy I dated. After I moved here for my job, I either worked or traveled during the Christmas holidays. He bought a small Christmas tree for me and had decorated it in my college colors with ornaments and mementos we had collected on our travels together. It was really sweet.

Favorite Yoga Pose:
Child's pose :)

Favorite Mantra:
I don't have a favorite mantra, but there is a phrase and a prayer that I sometimes use as a mantra. The first is "the universe is conspiring in my favor." The prayer is "all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well."

Best Yoga Advice:
The best advice that I've received is that every one's yoga practice is different. There's no competition; it's a journey.

TEACHER'S CORNER

Jolene Ryan

This month Jolene offers her best yoga tips, advice and insights for Radiance students.

Name a recent challenge you have faced in your yoga practice and how you confronted it.
Not having time for my own asana practice. I have let it go, and trust what I am making time for is more important and in time I will have the balance of asana back in my daily routine.

Read any good yoga books lately?:
"Downward Dogs and Warriors," by Zo Newell. This was a fun, quick read of wisdom tales for modern yogis. Each chapter was based on a yoga pose while you learned the story behind where the pose was derived from ancient Hindu mythology. The other piece was to do the pose and journal from the personal experience you had (part II for me).

What is next for your practice/teaching?
Travel to India to study at an ashram and complete the 1-month long Jivamukti training in May at the Omega Institute. Study and practice as much as I can for myself to then give back to each and every student I can. OM, Shanti, Peace, Peace, Peace, Namaste!
