MESSAGE FROM MASUDA

January has been a bittersweet month. There is excitement and hope about the inauguration of President Obama, and yet there is anxiety and stress for many about job security.

Some people, including several of our students, have lost their jobs. Other students have been reaching out to help with kind words, leads for other jobs, opportunities for housing, and ideas for self-employment.

One student said that the support here helps her feel stronger and less alone. Her words helped me to realize how much impact we can have on one another when we give and receive openly and genuinely.

A challenge to giving and receiving in this way can be our own resistance to change. When we stop resisting we create room for support and new possibilities.

Receiving and offering help each require a level of trust and courage. Asking for help may feel like a risk because it requires letting go of pride and ego. Offering help may also feel like a risk because it requires letting go of feelings of scarcity and fear. By taking these risks we create a supportive community that helps us move through our challenges and also provides a place to celebrate our successes.

I hope we all grow from receiving and offering help this year, and that we stay connected as a community.

Love,
Masuda
