December Newsletter |
MESSAGE FROM MASUDA This year, my husband and I put up a Christmas tree; it's the first one I've ever had. We're celebrating two years of marriage, and we're trying to establish traditions to celebrate with one another. This intention feels wonderful, but it's also a bit scary for me.
For much of my life, I have been reluctant to trust and place faith in traditions, opting to stay largely uprooted and detached rather than risk disappointment and loss. It's hard to stay uprooted and detached and practice yoga and meditation at the same time. The practice of yoga has led me to people and resources that have helped me to settle in and let myself grow roots.
Radiance Yoga is also settling in and growing roots. Last month some students and teachers practiced yoga and built teddy bears with children at a nearby homeless shelter. My hope for the new year is that we create many more opportunities to serve in this way. As a start, we're offering yoga workshops on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
Of course, we'll continue to practice everyone's favorite tradition, which is eating cookies after class.
Wishing you a wonderful and joyous holiday season.
Love,
Masuda |

TEACHER SPOTLIGHT Annie Scheppach
Annie teaches the Svaroopa class on Wednesday evenings. She loves inspiring her students to softly and gently open to healing and transformation.
Hometown:
Machias, ME
Childhood Ambition:
I knew I didn't want to be a school teacher. I was shy and my mom was a teache4r. I wanted to be different. And now, I love teaching!
Favorite Yoga Pose and Why:
Shavasana. It allows me to just be aware and truly experience my inner state.
Life Changing Moment:
Sixteen years ago, during a vacation in Cancun, I got a wake up call.I went from being a government executive to a wiser woman who loves practicing and teaching yoga and inspiring people to make conscious choices for healing.
One Thing You Want Students to Experience in Your Class:
A glimpse of opening and stillness in their bodies and minds and to know that they don't have to always be doing.
Perfect Day:
Waking up to a purring kitty, meditating, walking by the river alone or with a friend, teaching yoga.
What's Playing on Your Ipod:
I love listening to Mama Mia and Rickie Byers Beckwith.
Inspiration:
I am drawn to Michael Beckwith, (who founded Agape in LA) Ghandi, Wayne Dwyer, Meredith Young Sowers and I am inspired by our new president-elect!
Annie Teaches:
Wednesday
7:30 - 9:00 pm Svaroopa Yoga |
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Jennifer Hodge
Hometown:
Richmond, VA
What Got You in Trouble Most as a Child:
I was usually causing trouble and worry by getting injured (nothing major, thankfully). I was a tomboy who suffered broken bones, burns, and cuts requiring stitches.
Perfect Day:
Sleep in just a little bit. Enjoy a cup of coffee and quiet time with a book, the newspaper, or my journal. Follow with a yoga class or a run. Meet a friend for coffee or lunch. Take my dog to the park.
Favorite Spot in Old Town:
I enjoy so many facets of Old Town. I am still discovering side alleys, architectural novelties, lovely views, hidden gardens, etc. As for a specific place, Radiance Yoga rates up there highly! I love the people and the peaceful and welcoming environment.
Best Gift Ever:
During a particularly painful and difficult time, I was given the luxury of a month off between jobs thanks to some savings and support from my family. I used that time to "cocoon" by sleeping, exercising, eating well, volunteering with DC high school students, writing in my journal, and reading.
Favorite Yoga Pose:
One of my favorites right now is the "Archer Pose" because it makes me feel powerful and courageous and feel that I can rely on myself.
Favorite mantra:
There are so many great mantras, but the very first one I heard at a meditation class was: Aap Sahaaee Hoaa, Sachay Daa Sachaa Doaa, Har Har Har "The truest of the true has taken care of us, god god god." The music and singing touched me and I felt at peace.
Best Yoga Advice:
Breathe into it! |
