MESSAGE FROM MASUDA

For the past month or so I've been waking up and diving straight into my busy work day, sometimes skipping my daily meditation practice.

I've had a daily meditation practice for about six years and part of me feels that I should be able to skip a few months and still receive the benefits. But I've learned that as soon as I stop practicing, I feel off center and my mind becomes more cluttered.

I went to take a class with one of my teachers hoping that she would help me get back on track. She reminded me that this was a time of change and transition in my life and I needed to be compassionate with myself and trust that I'd find my way back to my daily practice.

My teacher helped me to let go of my judgments against myself and she encouraged me to find opportunities to meditate during the day. Meditation doesn't always have to be a formal practice in front of an alter. So I've started chanting mantras on my walk to work, breathing long and deep while sending emails, and learning to enjoy my meals one bite at a time.

I encourage all of you who struggle with finding time for a home practice to look for opportunities in your everyday life to connect with your breath, your body, and your spirit. Also be mindful of any judgments you might be harboring against yourself and look for ways to be more supportive and compassionate with yourself.

My hope is that we can be a support and guide for one another.

Love,
Masuda

TEACHER SPOTLIGHT

Jolene Ryan

Jolene teaches flow yoga and prenatal yoga classes and workshops at Radiance. She is a devoted teacher who helps students push through their perceived limits and discover new levels of awareness.

Hometown:
San Antonio, Texas

Childhood Ambition:
To be a photographer for National Geographic

Favorite Yoga Pose and Why:
Hanumanasana - challenges you to surrender and literally stretch your
limits. I also appreciate the story of
Hanuman the Monkey God, devotee to Rama. He unconditionally does everything he can to support Rama, including risking his life to save Sita, Rama's wife.

Life Changing Moment:
The loss of my husband 5 1/2 years
ago and the transitions I went through to get to the path I am now on.

One Thing You Want Students to Experience in Your Class:
To let go of some of the samskaras (old patterns) they are holding on
to that no longer benefit them in their life and begin to shift
directions toward what they truly want.

Perfect Day:
Sunny, breezy, 70's. Walking my best dog friend Sydney.

Indulgence:
Chocolate mousse

Biggest Challenge:
Letting go of what I believe my perfect life should be and be open to what I may not recognize as an opportunity in any given moment.

Inspiration:
Gandhi - Be the change you want to see in the world.

Jolene Teaches:
Wednesday
6:15-7:15pm Beginners Flow

Thursday
6:15-7:15pm Prenatal Yoga
7:30-9:00pm Flow Yoga 2

Saturday
8:00-9:30am Flow Yoga 2

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Christopher Smith (A.K.A. Toodles)

Hometown:
Arlington and Alexandria

What Got You in Trouble Most as a Child:
I used to get in a lot of trouble for disrupting classes, mainly for talking too much.

Perfect Day:
The perfect day will be the day I realize that every day is perfect. Until then a perfect day involves lots of good vegetarian food, yoga, hanging out with friends and sleeping late.

Favorite Spot in Old Town:
Sitting on the floor at the yoga studio, eating nuts and cookies, and talking (too much) with the teachers and students.

Best Gift Ever:
In high school my parents let me go to Europe with a bunch of friends. It was amazing.

Favorite Yoga Pose:
Shoulder stand, it's pretty easy for me to get up but it's challenging for me to stay up. And I feel radiant afterwards.

Favorite mantra:
Sat Nam

Best Yoga Advice:
In September I went to a jivamukti workshop at GW. When a student asked David Life about how to find a guru he told us that anyone and everyone (everything) is your guru.

"When you come before any teacher, set aside "I know" so that you can be taught. If you are already filled up with knowledge, like a cup of tea, and your teacher attempts to pour new tea in to your cup, you will just overflow and no benefit will be obtained."

-Sharon Gannon & David Life "Jivamukti Yoga"
